CFD has become an increasingly important tool for analyzing and designing the fluid handling equipment in use at Syncrude. The mineable oil sands process involves a large range of flow phenomena from Stokes flow in sedimentation vessels to supersonic flow in attrition nozzles. This presentation will provide an overview of the mineable oil sands process and will discuss examples of where CFD has been used throughout the process to provide new insights that have led to significant improvements in both reliability and process efficiency.

Kevin Reid is a Senior Research Associate in the Reliability and Process Improvements Team at Syncrude Canada Research & Development department. He received his BS and MS degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta and his PhD from the University of Cambridge. Kevin has been with Syncrude for almost 10 years working in the areas of extraction, upgrading and reliability with a focus on providing fluid dynamic modeling expertise.
