|Properties of Local Black Hole Horizons|

Black hole horizons are often characterized locally by marginally trapped surfaces, which have zero outward null expansion. In this talk, we discuss the physical properties of these horizons, in particular their area, angular momentum and surface gravity. We describe their evolution as matter and gravitational energy cross the horizon.
Stephen Fairhurst received his Ph D from Penn State University, supervised by Prof Abhay Ashtekar working on a local description of isolated black holes. He then had a post-doc in the gravity group at the University of Alberta, where he worked on local black holes and quantum gravity. Fairhurst is currently a post-doc at the University of Wisconsin -- Milwaukee working primarily on the LIGO search for coalescing binary systems.
