The talk will overview recent progress in the mathematical understanding of numerical approaches coupling an atomistic and a continuum description of matter. The talk is based upon a series of works in collaboration with X. Blanc (Univ Paris 6), F. Legoll (ENPC), P.-L. Lions (College de France). The perspective is mathematical. The purpose is to describe the theoretical tools and concepts that allow for a better foundation of the numerical approaches. It is also to point out some important unsolved mathematical issues.
Claude Le Bris is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussees, Paris. He is also Civil engineer-in-chief, Associate Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique and scientific leader of the MICMAC project (multiscale methods) at INRIA. Professor Le Bris has won the Blaise Pascal Prize 1999 from the French Academy of Sciences, the CS 2002 Prize in Scientific computing from Communications & Systems, and the Giovanni Sacchi-Landriani Prize 2002 from the Lombard Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has delivered an Invited section lecture at the ICM 2006, Madrid. He is a Distinguished Ordway Visitor, University of Minnesota, School of Mathematics, 2008/09.
