In recent years a bioinformatics bottleneck has emerged as one of the main challenges in analyzing high-throughput biology data, especially massive parallel sequencing data (also know as next-generation sequencing data). Even after the data is analyzed, further analysis is often needed to interpret the results. A view is provided of the type of bioinformatics expertise needed to lead a group to address this bottleneck and other bioinformatics problems. A vision is then given of a support program which takes existing expertise and infrastructure into account; assesses current needs and gaps in support; forecasts needs based on research goals; and, as soon as possible, begins staffing for data analysis.
Dr. Lynn Young, National Institutes of Health Library Bioinformatics Support Program, Bethesda, Maryland, works in the field of high-throughput data analysis, including microarray and next generation sequencing data. She provides consultations and training and collaborates on projects requiring detailed analyses. Dr. Young received her Ph.D. in physics from Purdue University.
